Amkor Technology Completes
Negotiations For
Two Taiwan Assembly Houses
June 21, 2001 - Amkor Technology (Nasdaq: AMKR) has signed
definitive agreements to acquire two semiconductor assembly
and test operations in Taiwan, assuring its fast track entry
into that country's semiconductor industry.
As previously announced, Amkor is acquiring Taiwan Semiconductor
Technology Company (TSTC) and Sampo Semiconductor Corporation
(SSC). The transactions are expected to close within the next
few weeks.
TSTC, located in Linkou, is a joint venture created in 1999
with Amkor, Acer and TSMC as major partners. SSC, located in
Lung-Tang, began operations in 1997 and is principally owned
by Sampo Corporation.
Both SSC and TSTC are manufacturers of high-demand semiconductor
devices required for cell phones, lap and desk-top computers,
hand-held devices and other popular digital electronic applications.
"Strong market presence by both SSC and TSTC provide Amkor
Technology with a long desired foothold as a provider of assembly
and test services in the Taiwan semiconductor market,"
said Eric Larson, executive vice president of corporate development
for Amkor.
Amkor will begin operating the two plants using existing staff
by mid July.
