Amkor Technology to Manufacture
Optical Switches for Onix Microsystems

Amkor Technology (Nasdaq: AMKR) has been selected to manufacture the PASSPORT all-optical switching engine from Onix Microsystems.

Based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, the PASSPORT all-optical switch will enable network equipment manufacturers and system providers the ability to effectively scale, manage, test and protect fiber optic networks.

Amkor will assemble, package and test the hermetic switch module, a 3.5" (88.9 mm) x 0.66" (16.5 mm) unit that will encase the switching components, including the MEMS module, fiber arrays, leads, and other devices. Amkor will assemble the PASSPORT at its A1, Advanced Package Development Center in Chandler, Ariz.

The contract marks Amkor's entry into optoelectronic component manufacturing.

"We chose Amkor because they are a recognized world leader in contract microelectronics manufacturing, and, coupled with our expertise in MEMS design, ensures that our all-optical switching engines will be reliable, scalable and offer the highest performance," said Steve Panyko, CEO of Onix.

"This strategic partnership with Onix capitalizes on our core competencies of assembling and testing microelectronic and MEMS devices," said Amkor President John Boruch. "Amkor's engineering expertise, supply chain management skills, and manufacturing proficiency with sub-micron geometry microelectronics are key elements to this fabrication program. We believe the rapidly growing optical component industry will increasingly turn to strategic manufacturing partners such as Amkor to meet its optoelectronic assembly and test requirements."
