NEWS RELEASE 12/15/2000

Electronics industry roadmap to webcast from APEX 2001
Under the spotlight ¨C the relevance of e-commerce in the electronics industry

APEX 2001, the electronics industry¡¯s global showcase organised IPC SMEMA Council at the San Diego Conference Centre, California between 14-18 January 2001, has been chosen as the venue for the launch of the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) 2000 Roadmap. The 2000 NEMI Roadmap reveals the key technology and infrastructure requirements that will be needed to keep electronics manufacturing companies competitive in the next decade.

Jim McElroy, executive director and CEO of NEMI, will present highlights from the 2000 NEMI Roadmap on Wednesday 17th January at U.S time 8:30am via a live webcast.

¡°The live webacast will give our global audience a glimpse of the future,¡± said Lisa Griffin, IPC Director of Assembly Industry Programmes. ¡°It will also give those engineers and managers that couldn¡¯t make the trip to California, a chance to participate in the APEX event. This is consistent with APEX's goals of providing our attendees and the global industry as a whole, with the latest information and technology available."

Also under the spotlight at APEX 2001 will be the e-business, e-commerce issue. A panel of business-to business experts, moderated by Ralph Kenton, a leading consultant in outsourcing, will be addressing the issue of e-trade in the electronics assembly industry.

The panel will look at the trade-off between the ability to offer customers solutions that meet their unique needs, versus doing it amazingly fast and at an incredibly low price. In addition, it will analyse how the two consortiums ¨C formed by the PC and datacom/telecoms worlds, to help OEMs and EMS companies identify and locate components by part number, as well as provide pricing, delivery and any applicable discounts ¨C will affect electronics manufacturing. Will it improve competitiveness or possibly create more problems than it solves?

Dr. Robert Ballard, a noted author, explorer and scientist, will deliver the keynote presentation at APEX 2001. His multi-media presentation will draw parallels between his journeys of exploration and discovery to everyday life. He will talk about taking risks and converting failures into successes.

Dr. Ballard has made several world-famous discoveries during the last 30 years, including locating the sunken R.M.S. TITANIC and the remains of the German Battleship BISMARK. Ballard used advanced technology to not only find these and other wrecks, but also enter and photograph the interiors with his remotely controlled robot.

With more than 100 deep-sea expeditions under his belt, Ballard has spent more time underwater than any other scientist in the world.

"Dr. Ballard is living proof that dreams can become reality," said Lisa Griffin, IPC Director of Assembly Industry Programmes. "By continually pushing the limits, he has proven that we can develop new technologies and overcome previously insurmountable roadblocks."

Ballard also contributes to National Geographic magazine, where he publishes up to 10 articles a year, produced six television specials, and for two years, hosted their weekly television series "Explorer."

About IPC
The IPC is a US-based trade association dedicated to the competitive excellence and financial success of its nearly 2,600 member companies which represent all facets of the electronic interconnection industry, including design, printed wiring board manufacturing and electronics assembly. As a member-driven organisation and leading source for industry standards, training, market research and public policy advocacy, IPC supports programmes to meet the needs of a US$44 billion industry that employs more than 400,000 people in the United States.

APEX has been organised by the IPC SMEMA Council in response to an industry need for a trade show that is cost-effective and fair for exhibitors, and highly focused on the products and technology of the electronics assembly industry. This approach, coupled with a premier conference program, organised by the industry, delivers the most attractive package to exhibition visitors. APEX features all segments of the electronics assembly industry, from bare boards to tested assemblies
