NEWS RELEASE 29th November 2000

Fairchild Semiconductor appoints Thomas Esperson
as Vice President of E-Business
New position strengthens Fairchild's aggressive
worldwide e-business initiative

Fairchild Semiconductor International, the global leader in multi-market semiconductors, has appointed Thomas Esperson as vice president of E-Business. Esperson will be responsible for the continued execution and integration of CUSTOMER FIRST, Fairchild's four-part, worldwide e-business initiative that supports the company's commitment to continued new product innovation, market share growth and superior customer service.

Esperson, who most recently created and managed e-commerce programmes for LEXMARK International and xStream Corporation, will oversee the full implementation of Fairchild's e-business initiatives as well as manage all Web-based activities and systems. Fairchild's four Internet initiatives focus on enabling Web-based product design; production planning and scheduling/supply chain management; customer service and support - including online ordering, delivery tracking and billing; and decision support intelligence.

"The e-business initiatives of CUSTOMER FIRST are fueling our drive to work more closely with our customers to help them capture new market opportunities," said John Watkins, senior vice president and chief information officer. "Tom is well qualified to take on the critical role of Fairchild's e-commerce centre of expertise and leadership, and we look forward to benefiting from his extensive e-commerce expertise."

In August, Fairchild announced an aggressive e-business initiative, designed to build on the company's global information support systems. Partnerships with IBM Global Services for the design and implementation of e-business applications and services, and with i2 Technologies for supply chain management optimisation products were also announced.

Moving forward rapidly with the initiative, Fairchild has since launched:
  • The EnSigna Lab on the Web: a first-of-its-kind website for systems designers to solve system issues and complicated design problems using includes simulation functions unique in the industry, saving time and money for customers.
  • WebSIM: an interactive Web-based simulator tool that allows design engineers to obtain immediate performance characteristics on Fairchild components, particularly those used in power-supply designs for notebooks, cell phones and PDAs.

Fairchild has also, through the implementation of new Web tools, dramatically reduced its product cycle time to 90 days for selected interface and logic products. The 90 days includes time from the decision to design to product delivery - representing an impressive 65 percent reduction in cycle time.

In addition to Esperson's recent work at LEXMARK International and xStream Corporation, he has also held management positions at Texas Instruments, Digital Equipment Corporation, NEC, and GRiD Systems Corporation

Esperson is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and Bentley College. In addition, he served as Visiting Scholar in Business Administration at Harvard Business School from January-October 1999.
