NEWS RELEASE 12/15/2000

Fairchild Semiconductor offers innovative bus switch
New device offers higher bit count and control of two full busses with only one package

Fairchild Semiconductor International has announced the latest addition to its industry-leading FST portfolio of high performance bus switches. The new 17-bit to 34-bit Multiplexer/Demultiplexer switch, FST34170 offers designers a clean, economical solution for simultaneous bus addressing by multiplexing/demultiplexing between two busses. The device provides switching of both 16-bits of data and a 1-bit strobe.

Ideally suited for servers using the SSTL data bus with DDR memory, the FST34170 bus switch enables addressing of two DDR memory modules with one data line. By controlling two memory modules from a single IC, the new device reduces board parts count for bus multiplexing/demultiplexing.

The FST34170 features only 4-ohm switch connection between two ports, with zero bounce in flow-through mode. Control inputs are compatible with TTL level circuits, and propagation delay between inputs and outputs is only 0.25 ns. A low Icc of 3uA minimises power loss.

Compared with devices currently on the market, the FST34170 multiplexes between two busses to provide simultaneous bus addressing and provides control of greater or equal to the same number of busses with fewer ICs, enabling bus multiplexing/ demultiplexing with just one IC. As with all products in the FST family, the device provides system isolation and added protection.

The FST34170 bus switch is priced at US$3.75 in 1,000-piece quantities. The devices are available in the TSSOP package, and production will begin in fourth quarter of 2000. Engineering samples are currently available.
