Fairchild PWM controller saves
power and enhances
reliability in off-line and DC:DC conversion applications
Integrated functions include soft-start, ON/OFF
control and protection circuitry
Fairchild Semiconductor International is introducing the FAN7554
versatile PWM controller IC for use with power MOSFETs in off-line,
DC:DC conversion and other switch-mode power-supply (SMPS) applications,
such as those found in desktop computers, monitors and power
adapters.
The FAN7554 is a current-mode PWM controller that operates up
to 500 kHz. It integrates control and power-savings circuitry
to eliminate several external components and reduce system power
consumption. Special protection circuitry improves reliability.
For example, a startup current of only 100 (A permits low-power
operation until the input threshold voltage is reached. An on/off-control
circuit invokes a power-savings mode, drawing only 200 (A instead
of 7 mA for normal operation.
Switch-mode power supplies face considerable stress over time,
such as rapid duty-cycle ramp ups and current surges. To improve
reliability, the FAN7554 incorporates soft-startup circuitry
to reduce stress on the outputs and improve its immunity to
current surges. The circuit also provides over-voltage protection
(OVP), over-current protection (OCP), over-load protection (OLP)
and over-current latchup protection (OCLP). This combination
of integrated features eliminates external components while
reducing the overall system footprint and improving system reliability.
The FAN7554 is available in 8-lead DIP or SOP packages. Pricing
begins at US$0.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities. For more information
